Lock picking is a permanent skill in Cataclysm. As you gain levels with your character your skills level up by themselves. For example, if you are on level 85 you’ll automatically have a lock picking skill of 425. There’s no longer a need to manually level up your lock picking skills, like you had to in the past.

With lock picking you don’t require a great deal of gold to level up. So while you might spend your money flying about, it’s isn’t a gold sink. If you find you are low on gold because you’ve been busy spending your time lock picking rather than golf farming, you should have a look at the gold guide.

However, before getting into the guide there are some things you should be aware of.

1.         You can only raise your lock picking skill a maximum of 5 times your level at any given time. For example, if you are a level 15 then your maximum lock picking will be 75 (15 x 5). Then again if you are a level 80 your maximum lock picking will be 400 (80 x 5).

2.         To learn how to lock pick you must be a Rogue, and when you’re ready to learn how to lock pick you will need to visit your Rogue trainer to get setup. When you reach level 16 you will be taught how to lock pick and sent on your quest.

3.         For some items, you can’t just right click them, and start lock picking. For some items that require lock picking you need to left click your lock picking skill in the general tab of your character sheet. Left click the box, door, item, or object.

4.         You no longer need thief’s tools to pick locks.

5.         To obtain skill gains from doors on a cool down timer, you’ll have to wait about 5 minutes before you get another skill off the doors.

1-70 will be done on the first chest sent to you, when you first learn your lock picking skills. There are a few alternatives to this route but they aren’t recommended. To complete this section you must level 14 in order to get your skill to 70. You can get your skill to 100 from these chests if you want:

•           Horde – Buccaneer’s Strongbox

•           Blood Elves – Burial Chest

•           Alliance – Practice Lockbox

71-170

Next in the guide is 70-170, which is mainly for a chest that’s part of the Poison Quest that all Rogues receive when they reach level 20. You will likely need to help for the quest at level 20.  You can also opt to wait for level 24 -28 when it will become much easier for you to do the quest.
